Can I Handle My Addiction on My Own?

Being Able to Enjoy Life Again

We tend to deny our dependency. It’s not bad intention—we simply don’t see it clearly. Addiction often comes with shame, lying, and evasiveness towards others and ourselves.

Those around us usually find it a difficult topic to raise. Often, partners are the only ones who speak up. Because they are alone in this, it can easily be dismissed as nagging. Addiction care in Amsterdam can help with this.

Your Treatment Is Covered by Basic Health Insurance

Our care falls under the basic health insurance and is fully or largely reimbursed by your insurer. That sounds good, but it’s not all straightforward. Here’s why.

Kick Your Habits is growing and thriving. More and more people understand that what many of us need is a combination of “working on your unhelpful habits” and “exploring and addressing the issues behind them.” This desire to grow means we choose not to hold contracts with every insurer. At the same time, we are well aware that, as healthcare providers, we have a role in controlling overall healthcare costs. But we also see how much our treatment can improve people’s quality of life, which often leads to lower healthcare use later on.

For 2026, we do have contracts with a few insurers: Zorg en Zekerheid, DSW, VGZ, and CZ.

If you are insured with one of these providers, your treatment is fully covered until the insurer’s budget is used up. With Zorg en Zekerheid and DSW, there is no ceiling—very generous and convenient!

ONVZ, in contrast to other insurers, rejects many of our authorisation requests. So if you are insured with ONVZ, be aware that it is not certain you will be able to continue treatment with us after the intake.

With other insurers, we don’t have a contract, which gives us more freedom in how we approach your treatment. There is also no budget ceiling. Unfortunately, this means we receive less reimbursement—on average 69% of the market/NZA rate. Almost all other mental health providers then bill you for the remainder. Because we value social responsibility, we ask you to pay only 10% of the costs instead of 31%.*

The maximum is €150 per quarter, so €50 per month—roughly the cost of 8 glasses of wine or beer in a café, or 6 bottles of cheap wine from the supermarket.

If you earn above average, we ask for 15%, which works out to €250 per quarter.

In short, you quickly get the value of your contribution back through our treatment! 😉

About every 10 weeks, we send a bill. If this causes financial difficulty, we’ll work it out with you.

What you get in return for this contribution:

  • Short waiting times, and your intake is conducted by the therapist who will treat you—so you can immediately see if it clicks.
  • After a positive intake, treatment starts straight away.
  • The length of your treatment is tailored to what you need.
  • Our treatment is personalised. Always evidence-based, we also address the underlying issues behind your problems.
  • High-quality biological espresso and cappuccino in the waiting room.

All in all, it’s unfortunate that we have to ask you for a contribution. But think of it this way: you’ll quickly get it back by following our treatment and swapping your unhelpful habits for better ones.
