Alcohol Addiction Treatment in Groningen
The sooner you step in, the better
“I came to Kick your Habits because of excessive alcohol and medication use.
Because of the waiting list, I started in the stepping-stone group, and immediately afterwards moved into individual therapy. That wasn’t easy. All kinds of fears surfaced, painful memories and feelings I could no longer push away.
The therapist guided me through this with care and calm. Through role play, conversations and EMDR, I was able to process and let go. I also learned to set boundaries.
Marieke, I’m deeply grateful for your help, professionalism and attention. It gave my life a strong push in the right direction — a positive turn for me and for those close to me.
Thanks as well to the KYH team. I wish anyone struggling with substance use or addiction a treatment like this.”

Control over your drinking?
Sometimes you wish you had a bit more control over your drinking.
Once you’ve started, it can be hard to stop. You often end up having a few more glasses than you planned. And then there are the discussions with your partner about your alcohol use. You regularly find yourself trying to convince others — and yourself — that you have everything under control.
The first drinks usually feel good. After about ten minutes, alcohol reaches the brain. You relax. You feel lighter, more cheerful. Inhibitions fade and self-criticism quietens down.
Starting a conversation becomes easier. More enjoyable. Worries about work or your relationship don’t seem quite so heavy.
You’d be mad to pass up a magic remedy like that…
It’s understandable that alcohol is so widely used and liked. But those positive effects can slowly turn into negative ones — and into addiction.

Negative effects of alcohol
Short term
While drinking
-
Cheerfulness can shift into exaggerated emotions and overconfidence.
-
Inhibitions fade. Your face may become red and puffy, coordination less steady.
-
Increased risk of accidents, arguments, unsafe sex, losing things, blackouts.
Short-term effects
-
Weight gain from the calories in alcohol and sugars in drinks.
-
Bad breath due to alcohol breakdown and a dry mouth (alcohol is dehydrating).
-
Poorer sleep quality — more restless and less deep. You may fall asleep faster, but you don’t truly rest.
-
Problems at work and in your relationships.
-
Shame and guilt.
Long term
-
Increased risk of cancer, particularly breast cancer, cancers of the mouth, throat and oesophagus, bowel cancer, liver cancer, and pancreatic cancer.
-
Risk of memory problems, and difficulty planning and organising daily tasks.
-
Risk of chronic liver disease.
-
Low mood, anxiety, burnout.
-
Loneliness.
For your health, it’s wise to at least moderate your alcohol use.
Then there’s the question of dependence — or the risk of developing it.
If you drink regularly, that risk is real. Unfortunately, alcohol can lead to dependence and tolerance quite quickly.
One in ten adults in the Netherlands has an alcohol problem.
Dependent on alcohol?
Do I have an alcohol addiction?
It can be difficult to recognise for yourself whether you’re dependent on alcohol — and we often have a tendency to deny it.
To get a first sense of your risk, consider how much the following statements apply to you:
- As a man, do you drink more than 20 units of alcohol per week, or as a woman more than 15?
- Do you drink daily and find it hard to stop after a few drinks?
- Do you notice that you can tolerate more alcohol and get less drunk than before?
- Do you often try to convince others that your drinking is under control?
- Is there always a reason to drink?
- Do you try to cut back on your drinking?
- Do you sometimes think about stopping drinking altogether?
- Do you feel guilty about your drinking?
- Does it irritate you when others comment on your drinking?
Unsure whether you still have control over your drinking?
Talk about it with someone you trust, make an appointment with your GP, or get in touch with us.
